Description
The new Birdie EVO Plus & XPlus have been designed to offer a high feature set of options that have been blended with new technologies to provide maximum comfort and security when lifting or transferring a patient to or from a bed, chair or even the floor.
Based on the renowned Birdie, the new range has been customer insight-led, encompassing everything valued on the Birdie whilst bringing in new features to further enhance the client and carer experience.
The Birdie EVO Plus & XPlus range encompasses an ergonomic lift that allows the client to be easily rotated 360°, making positioning easier for the carer and reducing anxiety.
The high boom ensures space for the client, even when the hoist is in its highest position, and the optimised space in front of the actuator reduces the risk of injury to the client’s knees.
Easy handling
The hoists can easily be folded and unfolded without the need for tools. Hoists take up minimal space when stored and are easy to push and transport. If required, the mast and boom can be easily detached from the base – no tools required.
Comfort & space
The Invacare Birdie Evo Plus & X-Plus ensures total user comfort. With extreme space for the user, even when the hoist is in the highest position, users experience a very comfortable lift and transfer as the user can easily be rotated. More so, positioning the user into a bed or wheelchair is made easier for carers.
The optimisation of space creates a high level of comfort as the user’s knees are away from the hoist actuator. This provides a low risk of a knee injury.

Being self-contained units, mobile hoists don’t require any track installation, so they offer more flexibility of use. However, they demand more of the carer and are not designed for moving people long distances: a wheelchair or shower chair is better for this, or a ceiling track hoist (above).
In selecting a mobile hoist, thought needs to be given to the environment where it will be used: whether there is enough room to manoeuvre it into the correct position; if the legs of the hoist will fit under or around any furniture, such as bed, bath or chair; whether the floor surface is smooth enough to allow it to operate efficiently: thick carpet or threshold strips are difficult to move over. It is also essential to check that they have a sufficient operating range to lift the person clear of any surface and perhaps pick them up from floor level in an emergency. They also need to be stored when not in use, preferably in an area out of the way and with a charging point for their battery.
There are smaller mobile hoists with narrower bases which are easier to move in more confined areas. These have a maximum load of perhaps 20 stone (100 kg) or a bit more and are helpful in the domestic environment. Larger hoists capable of lifting up to 40 stone (250 kg) give more flexible hoisting in hospital and nursing home situations with a range of patients and more space to work with.
Mobile hoist advantages
- Suitable for quick transfers that involve sitting to stand and back again.
- Also suitable for transporting people in a sitting position.
Mobile hoist disadvantages
- Requires flat, level floors.
- Difficult to manoeuvre on carpets
- Requires effort to move and position correctly.
- It is difficult to lift from regular domestic beds and seating without enough gap to allow the legs of the hoist to pass underneath.
- Requires charging/plugging in
- Limited lift height capacity.
- The wheels need to be locked and unlocked during the transfer process.
